Our Work in Bangladesh
Abdul Giash Spice Bazzar Foundation supports practical, community-led projects in Bangladesh, with a focus on care, education, clean water and dignity for local people.
The foundation’s main work in Bangladesh is based around three key projects: an orphanage in Sylhet, a major clean water project, and MBCOS – Muslim Burial Council of Sylhet.
Each project has been developed to meet a real community need, with local support helping make sure the work is delivered in a practical and respectful way.
PROJECTS IN BANGLADESH
Orphanage in Sylhet
The foundation supports an orphanage in the East Shahi Eidgah / TB Gate area of Sylhet, currently caring for and educating 400 children.
The orphanage provides children from disadvantaged backgrounds with care, structure and education, helping give them greater stability and opportunity as they grow.
Education is provided through the Bangladesh curriculum in both Bangla and English, supporting children from early years through to age 16.
This project reflects one of the foundation’s main aims: to support children and young people who need care, guidance and opportunity.
Clean water project
The foundation is working on a 2,500-well clean water project across Bangladesh, helping poorer communities access safe drinking water.
So far, 500 wells have been completed, with a further 2,000 planned over the next two to three years.
The project began in Sylhet and is planned to expand across further areas of Bangladesh, supporting communities where access to clean water remains a daily challenge.
By providing practical infrastructure, the water well project helps improve everyday life for families, children and older people in the communities it reaches.
Muslim Burial Council of Sylhet
MBCOS – Muslim Burial Council of Sylhet is a free Islamic burial support service for local residents in Sylhet.
The service provides practical and dignified support for families at one of the most difficult times in life. This includes washing and shrouding, burial clothing, cold storage and ambulance transport to the cemetery.
MBCOS is provided at no cost to local residents, helping families access respectful burial support without the added pressure of financial cost.
The project is understood to be the first free Muslim burial support facility of its kind in Sylhet.
Managed with local support
The foundation’s Bangladesh projects are supported locally by a committee of 16 people.
This local committee helps manage the projects on the ground, making sure the work is connected to the needs of the communities it serves.
The ongoing running costs and supplies are supported locally through community fundraising, helping the projects continue to operate and support people day to day.
